Lights, camera, reflection! Scaling up student-created video capabilities for curriculum enhancement

Purpose

Lights, Camera, Reflection!Awarded in February 2011, this is a current TLEF-funded project collaboratively undertaken with our colleagues in the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Arts and the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology.

The goal of this project is to enable UBC Medical (and Arts where applicable) students to share, review, and annotate video vignettes, thus developing graduate skills such as communication, creativity, and peer/ self reflection.  As a result, the project will have developed resources that can be applied to a variety of other disciplines.

Overview

The objectives of the project are to:

  1. Develop educational use cases of student-created videos in the context of rural medical students’ training, including, where relevant, intersections between the Faculties of Medicine and Arts to enhance learning experiences;
  2. Evaluate the pedagogical benefits, efficacy and robustness of existing video editing/ sharing tools in Kaltura platform to support the educational cases (findings and recommendations will be in consultation with CTLT);
  3. Carry out improvements to this platform to enrich its pedagogical potential;
  4. Implement a set of workflow, interface and technical instructions for secure uploading, sharing and feedback on the videos;
  5. Set up appropriate web space and an easy-to-use social media interface for storage, retrieval, and sharing of the videos with the instructor and student communities;
  6. Develop a set of technical and instructional guides for instructors and students;
  7. Work with staff and students to incorporate reflective video into the pilot courses – their curriculum, formative assessment and learning activities, as well as other UBC initiatives.
