Purpose
The purpose of this research project is to develop and test core electronic medical record (EMR) competencies to be included in medical students’ objective structured clinical exams (OSCEs).
This project intends to answer three main questions:
- What electronic medical record (EMR) competencies are necessary for medical students?;
- How can these EMR competencies be taught and incorporated into the standard Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE)?; and
- Do including these EMR competencies as a part of regular instruction and examination increase knowledge transfer?
Overview
The project consists of three main phases:
- Collect information from experts and current literature to determine the core set of EMR competencies;
- Develop and integrate learning materials about the EMR competencies into fourth year medical curriculum; and
- Evaluate the usability, validity and knowledge transfer of the competencies and learning materials via student testing.
Currently, we are in Phase 2 of the project.
