Your Voice Counts: Training patients to be effective partners in health system redesign

As part of the ongoing InterCultural Online Health Network (iCON) project, we are collaborating with Impact BC’s Patient Voices Network, Fraser Health, and the Ministry of Health on a unique project called Your Voice Counts: Training patients to be effective partners in health system redesign.

Purpose

Funded by the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, the purpose of this project is to develop knowledge and skills required for patients to understand, be engaged in and contribute to the health care system in the BC context and engage with the system at local, regional and provincial levels.

Overview

This project seeks to develop and host face-to-face and on-line skill-building workshops to support patients interested in sharing their perspectives and advice to better engage with the health system. The idea is to educate patients around how to effectively get involved and jointly shape and redesign our primary healthcare system. The approach draws on the principle of mutual learning whereby health providers not only learn directly from patients, but also learn about opportunities and effective ways to foster patient involvement in the health system.

As part of an upcoming iCON forum, skill-building workshops will be delivered to assist patients interested in sharing their perspectives and advice to better engage with the health system. Patients will receive education around how to get involved and jointly shape and redesign our primary healthcare system. The approach draws on the principle of mutual learning whereby health providers not only learn directly from patients, but also learn about opportunities and effective ways to foster patient involvement in the health system.
