New drug topic Acute Otitis Media launched at BC PAD!

On November 26, 2012, the BC Provincial Academic Detailing (PAD) Service launched their second drug topic of the year focusing on Acute Otitis Media (AOM).  The previous topic Medications for Osteoporosis: Focus on Bisphosphonates will still be available for academic detailing sessions until January 31, 2013, and Statins and Cardiovascular Disease until January 31, 2014.

During an academic detailing session, physicians and health professionals will have an opportunity to discuss:

  • why ‘watchful waiting’ (no antibiotics) is the recommended way to treat most cases of AOM;
  • why amoxicillin is recommended as first-line therapy when antibiotics are warranted;
  • when to use standard dose versus high dose amoxicillin;
  • management options in penicillin-allergic patients;
  • recent practice-changing recommendations to the antibiotic treatment of AOM.

We have helped BC’s academic detailers prepare for the launch of AOM by setting up detailing sessions with students of the UBC Pharmacy Undergraduate Society (PhUS) to practice conducting academic detailing sessions online. We felt that this would be a great opportunity for pharmacy students to connect with academic detailers while also gaining exposure to the field of academic detailing and earn some extracurricular experiences. One student participant said “I found it very informative and concise…..Being able to do the session at home was very convenient.”

Contact BC PAD today to register for either an in-person or an online session via web-conferencing (also known as Technology Enabled Academic Detailing or TEAD). For more information, please visit www.bcpad.ca
