Virtual Check-Up eHeath Clinic

iCON hosts well-attended Punjabi Community Health Forum on Living Well with Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease in Surrey, BC.

On Saturday, October 26th, 2013, the Punjabi speaking community came together at the Grand Taj Banquet Hall to learn about Living Well with Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease. The event began at 11:30am with an Open House for participants to connect with and learn about local resources available in their community. Filling the hall to capacity, over 800 attendees participated in the event with 28 households connecting online from across the province.

This forum brought together community members, leaders, healthcare providers, and health organizations who shared information and networked with fellow health enthusiasts to learn, engage, connect and support each other in achieving better health. A big thank you to all of the amazing community organizations like Safeway Pharmacy, PICS, DIVERSEcity, My Health My Community, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association,  and the Centre for Comprehensive Motivational Interventions, who came out to share their information with the community.

During the Open House, iCON launched the Virtual Check-Up eHealth clinic, receiving a tremendous response from participants. Delivered in collaboration with medical residents and health professional students, over 150 attendees participated in the clinic where they explored through demonstrations how technologies such as biosensors and smartphones can be used to help track and monitor personal health factors such as blood pressure and body mass index while also trying out mobile apps to assist in managing sleep, diet and exercise as part of healthy living.

As the highlight of the event, an interdisciplinary panel of health experts including an internist, psychiatrist, pediatrician, pharmacist, immunologist, Dietitian, and family physicians delivered interactive and engaging presentations on how to prevent and manage diabetes and cardiovascular disease followed by a rich and illuminating questions and answer session with the audience. Wrapping up the forum, Honorable Michael de Jong, Minister of Finance offered closing remarks and words of encouragement. A webcast recording of the event will be posted on iconproject.org in the coming weeks, please stay tuned!
